Chapter 11: The opportunity has come

Chapter 011 The opportunity has come

    “You’re a good girl, hehe…”

Zhang Su casually handed Zheng Xinyu a metaphorical “nice person card.”

    “Go to h*ll, you a**!”

Zheng Xinyu never expected to be on the receiving end of such a remark. She puffed her cheeks in anger, glaring at Zhang Su with fire in her eyes.

“Enough of this nonsense… Let’s figure out how to deal with the zombie outside the door.”

Zhang Su immediately regretted his earlier teasing. He quickly adopted a serious tone, bringing the conversation back to the pressing matter.

“You deal with it if you want! I’m not going!”

Zheng Xinyu grumbled, her tone filled with frustration. She turned toward the window, as if intending to draw the curtains for fresh air, but hesitated. After a moment’s thought, she crouched down beneath the windowsill, burying her head deep in her arms, lost in her thoughts.

Zhang Su understood that trying to comfort or force her at this moment wouldn’t help.

Checking his watch, he realized it was already past noon. After all their earlier commotion, he rubbed his stomach and said, “We’ve been up for a while now—aren’t you hungry?”

“Yes… I’m hungry…” Sёarch* The n?velFire.net website on Google to access chapters of novels early and in the highest quality.

Zheng Xinyu’s voice was soft, almost whimpering, as if she was holding back tears.

Zhang Su, seasoned in dealing with such situations, walked over to her, gently patted her head, and said, “I’ll make us something to eat.”

As Zhang Su’s footsteps receded, Zheng Xinyu lifted her head slightly, her expression a mix of grievance and sadness.

Cooking a proper meal wasn’t within Zhang Su’s skill set, but self-heating meals and instant food were foolproof.

“Spicy pork or mushroom beef—your pick?”

Ten minutes later, Zhang Su returned to the living room, holding two boxes of steaming self-heating rice and pointing them out to Zheng Xinyu, who had now returned to the sofa.

Despite her lingering annoyance and indignation, those feelings couldn’t fill an empty stomach. She had to eat.

    “I’ll take the spicy pork…”

The aroma of the meals quickly filled the air. The self-heating pots only took about fifteen minutes to cook, but Zhang Su finished his portion in just five. The rest of the time, he spent trying to persuade Zheng Xinyu to help with the zombie problem.

“Blah blah blah… Zhang Su, I didn’t realize you could nag so much. You’ve completely killed my appetite!”

With that, Zheng Xinyu pushed her bowl, still two-fifths full, toward him and said, “I can’t finish it. If you don’t mind, don’t waste it.”

Zhang Su was unexpectedly touched by her quick cooperation. After taking a bite himself, he pushed it back to her and said, “Don’t eat so little. I’m serious—get ready, and let’s deal with that zombie together!”

“Brother, Brother Su, my dearest brother, could you please not pressure me? Ask me for anything else—literally anything—and I’ll do it. Just don’t make me deal with zombies…”

When she emphasized “anything,” her tone made it clear it wasn’t just a hint—it was an outright proposition.

Zhang Su smirked, contemplating whether post-victory rewards could be shared.

“Xinyu, this situation is worse than we imagined. Just think—Qin City alone has hundreds of thousands of people, not counting the surrounding counties. Even in the harbor district, there are over 800,000 residents. How many people can a few helicopters rescue?”

“You have to understand, this isn’t just a disaster for one city, one province—it’s the whole world! We can’t avoid facing this. Compared to the people who’ve already died, we’re a thousand times luckier. Summon your courage and confront the challenge!”

A motivational speech served as dessert, meant to nourish her resolve.

Zheng Xinyu closed her eyes in pain, the zombie’s grotesque image replaying in her mind. She opened them again, as if ready to say something, only to see Zhang Su offering her a spoonful of fragrant rice.

    “Open wide, eat up.”

    Chomp!

She obediently finished the remainder of her food, placed the empty bowl down, hesitated, and said, “Brother Su, you’re right. I’ve seen the harsh reality. But… can you give me a few more days? Maybe the zombie outside will leave on its own?”

    “Sigh.”

Zhang Su sighed deeply and motioned her to the window.

He opened a small gap in the curtain, allowing them both to peek outside. Leaning close to her ear, he whispered, “Do you see the situation out there? Count how many zombies are wandering around.”

From their vantage point, Zheng Xinyu roughly estimated at least twenty to thirty zombies roaming nearby. This was only one part of the neighborhood; extrapolating from this, the entire residential area could easily have over a hundred zombies.

“Do you see how dire it is? Waiting for rescue is one approach, but like I said, relying on others isn’t as dependable as relying on ourselves!”

Zhang Su’s years of experience navigating society, interacting with people, had honed his skills. Whether persuading or inspiring, he was a natural.

“Fine. But, Brother Su, you—huh? Brother Su, look! The top floor of Unit 2, Building 4!”

Zheng Xinyu was just about to agree when she spotted someone waving frantically in their direction.

“Even with such a small gap in the curtain, they noticed us? They must’ve been watching us for a while!” Zhang Su muttered, following her gaze. Sure enough, a young man was kneeling on a windowsill, waving both arms desperately, clearly trying to get their attention.

    “Just ignore him.”

Zhang Su closed the curtain without hesitation, blocking out all light. Now wasn’t the time to bother with irrelevant people.

Zheng Xinyu didn’t argue. With the internet down and no way out of the apartment, even though the other unit was less than 100 meters away, collaboration or meaningful communication was impossible.

“Brother Su, we don’t even have weapons. How are we supposed to deal with zombies?”

She pointed toward the door, finally mustering her determination and deciding to act decisively.

    Rawrrr!

Almost as if it heard her resolve, the zombie in the hallway let out a feral, bloodthirsty screech, shaking their nerves.

Before Zhang Su could react, loud banging sounds echoed through the hallway—not at their door, but another.

Without a word, Zhang Su rushed to the peephole and saw the zombie violently pounding on the door of apartment 802 with more force than before.

“Ah! No! Help! Please, don’t kill me—don’t!”

A series of sharp, frantic screams came from behind the opposite door. Though muffled by layers of walls, it was clear the person inside was crying out for help.

The content wasn’t important. What mattered was that someone was alive in 802.

    “This is our chance!”

Zhang Su’s eyes gleamed. Whatever was happening across the hall, he knew this was a rare opportunity!
