Chapter 030 Don’t be deceived by the God’s perspective
“Look over there! Check out Building 7! Someone’s flying a drone!”
Whether it was luck or sharp eyesight, Zheng Xinyu quickly noticed someone crouched behind a window on the second floor of the middle unit of Building 7, operating a drone in the air.
Just as Zhang Su turned to look at Building 7, he suddenly saw four figures appear at the building’s corner. The person controlling the drone leaned out of the window, spotted their companions arriving, placed the remote on the windowsill, and, without hesitation, jumped out of the window!
Their fluid actions made it clear that this was a well-rehearsed plan. So far, everything seemed to be going smoothly—but the real challenge was just beginning.
The second floor was just over three meters high. Without some skill, a jump from that height could easily result in severe injury or even death if something went wrong.
It was clear, however, that the person who jumped wasn’t reckless. Upon landing, they rolled forward to disperse the impact, sprawling awkwardly but effectively mitigating the fall.
The other four rushed to the man’s side. A woman helped him up, while another man handed him a backpack. Without a word, the man who had jumped joined the group as they sprinted toward the perimeter wall, strapping the backpack on as he ran.
The five quickly reached the collapsed section of the wall. Just as they prepared to climb over, a small group of zombies suddenly charged out from the other side of the building!
Danger struck in an instant. The group clearly hadn’t anticipated that some zombies wouldn’t be drawn away by the drone. In their panic, two people tripped over the rubble.
Despite their seemingly stiff movements, zombies were anything but slow. When chasing prey, their speed could easily rival a brisk human walk. In no time, they were upon the two fallen individuals.
“It''s bad!”
Zhang Su’s knuckles whitened as he gripped the windowsill, his mind racing as he imagined how he would handle such a situation.
Zheng Xinyu and Zhong Xiaoshan clenched their fists tightly, holding their breath. It was as though it wasn’t strangers running for their lives, but themselves. Sёarch* The novel(F~)ire.net website on Google to access chapters of novels early and in the highest quality.
“Pick up bricks! Throw them! Bags are too soft—they’re useless!”
Zheng Xinyu shouted out advice in frustration as she watched a woman in the group ineffectively hit a zombie with a travel bag.
It seemed someone in the group heard her. A man bent down, picked up a chunk of debris the size of a watermelon, and hurled it at the zombies. But then something absurd happened…
Perhaps due to nerves, the man forgot to release the debris on time. The massive force sent him stumbling forward and tumbling down the rubble!
Falling in front of zombies was dangerous enough on flat ground, let alone from a height. Still, his fall had an unintended benefit—it knocked the zombies attacking his two companions off balance, giving them a chance to scramble to safety!
“Ahh!”
Zheng Xinyu and Zhong Xiaoshan both gasped as they saw the man and the zombies tumble down together.
“It’s not looking good…”
Zhang Su muttered under his breath, a trace of sorrow in his voice. Given the situation, unless the group banded together to fight or had firearms, there was no way to save the fallen man.
Firearms were unlikely, and as for working together…
In an organized and prepared scenario, maybe. But in a sudden crisis like this? Impossible.
Just as Zhang Su predicted, the people on the rubble reacted slower than the zombies’ instincts. The zombies swarming at the base of the rubble, excited by the scent of blood, immediately pounced. The group above froze, unsure what to do.
Facing a single zombie, an average adult might stand a chance if not caught off guard. But against three or four zombies simultaneously, especially after a disorienting fall?
The result was tragically obvious.
The zombies swarmed the man. His terrified screams echoed, faint but audible even across the near 100-meter distance separating Zhang Su and the others. He flailed his arms wildly, like a drowning man grasping at nonexistent lifelines. But there was no one to save him…
One zombie lunged for the man’s exposed neck, tearing into him. Blood splattered everywhere.
A woman’s hysterical screams rang out from outside the window. On the rubble above, a woman in a windbreaker frantically hurled rocks at the zombie biting the man, but it was useless—it didn’t even slow the attack.
The loud cries attracted more zombies, diverting them from chasing the drone. Soon, several broke off and began heading toward the rubble and perimeter wall.
One man covered the screaming woman’s mouth while another dragged her toward the road. A third member of the group stayed behind briefly to hold off the advancing zombies before retreating to join the others.
In moments, their figures disappeared behind nearby obstacles. The man who had thrown the stone, however, was left forever among the rubble.
Their attempt to climb a single collapsed perimeter wall—with some planning and preparation—had still resulted in a death. It was a cruel and tragic failure.
“They just… left him…”
Zheng Xinyu stared blankly at where the group had disappeared, her disbelief evident.
It was one thing for the others to leave, but even the two who had been rescued didn’t try to help the fallen man. The coldness of it shook her to her core.
Zhong Xiaoshan also struggled to accept what had just happened. Her voice was low as she said, “There were only six zombies, and two had already been knocked down. Killing them all wouldn’t have been easy, but if those four had fought back together, they could’ve saved him!”
“You’re right,” Zhang Su replied, his tone heavy. “But ordinary people can’t always make the best decisions in moments of crisis. Fear and selfishness dominate—that’s human nature. There’s no point feeling guilty about it…”
“Unless you’re a trained soldier, it’s hard to expect anyone to naturally risk their life for the group. Don’t let this outsider’s perspective fool you. If one day we face the same situation, we might not do any better than those who ran.”
Zhang Su’s serious expression made Zheng Xinyu and Zhong Xiaoshan glance at him doubtfully. He continued, “As onlookers, we can imagine countless ways things could’ve gone differently and believe we’d make the perfect decision. But as participants…”
“Could you really react in just one second?”
Before they could answer, Zhang Su swung his arm. The axe in his hand stopped just inches from the two women.
“Ahh!”
“Stop—!”
Instinctively, both women closed their eyes and raised their hands to shield themselves.
“See? When danger strikes, there’s no time for perfect analysis. Only instinct kicks in—and that instinct isn’t always the best choice.”
Zhang Su lowered his arm slowly. “If it were the three of us in that situation… If I ran alone, I’d probably make it. But with your current condition, there’s an 80% chance you’d both die. If I stayed to help you, there’s still a 50% chance we’d all die.”
Zheng Xinyu and Zhong Xiaoshan exchanged glances, their emotions complicated. Witnessing a survivor being devoured by zombies left them feeling powerless, as though they’d been in his place.
“Isn’t there anything we can do? I refuse to be dead weight!”
Zheng Xinyu asked defiantly, a determined glint in her eyes.
“Train.”
Zhang Su’s reply was brief but firm.
It wasn’t just about physical skills—it was about building courage, composure, and quick reactions.
